Dean Saunders will take charge of Doncaster this weekend after manager Sean O'Driscoll was placed on gardening leave by the Championship club.

Rovers made the announcement early on Friday morning with the club bottom of the Championship table with only one point from seven matches after a miserable start to the season.

The Keepmoat Stadium club only avoided relegation by six points last season after failing to win any of their last 12 matches, with O'Driscoll and assistant Richard O'Kelly now paying the price after five years at the helm.

"It is with regret that the shareholders of Doncaster Rovers FC have taken the decision based on the long run of poor results that Sean O'Driscoll and Richard O'Kelly be put on gardening leave," a club statement said.

Current position

"They felt that action needed to be taken to address the current position.

"They would like to thank Sean and Richard for all their work during the five years at the club including winning at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley."

The statement added that former Liverpool striker Saunders will take charge of the club's match with Crystal Palace on Saturday, with the Welshman leaving his post with non-league Wrexham to sign what is understood to be a three-year deal with the Championship side.

O'Driscoll had received the public backing of Rovers chairman John Ryan only two days ago.

"I've never responded to hotheads who want to sack somebody, I don't think it's ever worked, look at Sheffield United," Ryan said.
