Varney stars in Crewe victory

Luke Varney's last-gasp brace saw Crewe Alexandra through to the Johnstone's Paint Northern Section final after a 4-2 win over Chesterfield.

Dario Gradi's side will now face Doncaster Rovers in the regional final after the first hat-trick of Varney's career helped them to record a thrilling victory at Saltergate.

Young forward Nicky Maynard scored the other goal for the away side, opening the scoring after 20 minutes when he beat the offside trap to convert Ben Rix's pass.

Chesterfield equalised through an excellent header from Derek Niven (31), but after the break Varney hit the first of his three with a great finish after 54 minutes.

When Paul Hall equalised again for The Spireites with six minutes to go the game looked destined for penalties, but Varney then made his late intervention.

The striker sealed the win in injury time as he slotted home after a clearance struck referee Richard Beeby, and then rubbed salt into the wound by grabbing his third soon after.
