Crewe Alexandra are set to hold talks with a mystery shot-stopper as they bid to bring goalkeeping experience to Gresty Road.

First-team coach Steve Holland has recently seen Ben Williams and Owain fon Williams turn down new deals at Crewe.

The Railwaymen are keen to bring in a new face to bolster their ranks and assistant manager Neil Baker has confirmed that the club have set their sights on an unnamed out-of-contract player in the Championship.

"We haven't deliberately gone for an older keeper - I don't think that matters, as long as they are good enough," Baker told The Sentinel.

"But this keeper has played in the Championship and has the sort of quality we would be very pleased to have in our team."

Pressure

And Baker also admits that Crewe are under pressure to bring in new faces after narrowly avoiding League One relegation in the 2007/08 campaign.

He added: "We were generally disappointed with some of the players we brought in last year - especially the loan players.

"But being fifth-from-bottom isn't good enough and we need to move up the league. We recognise we have to bring in better players to do that.

"But we also have to be patient because, although we could bring in two or three straight away, they might not be right."
