A host of clubs are watching Crewe's highly-rated midfielder Gary Roberts situation closely, skysports.com understands.

The 21-year-old is already a lynchpin in Alexandra's midfield after scoring six goals last season.

He has made made over 100 appearances for the club and has 12 months left on his contract but he looks unlikely to sign an extension with the interest in him growing.

The Chester-born former England youth international could now emerge as a target in the summer transfer window - although Crewe would be loath to lose one of their prized homegrown assets after such an impressive season.

Derby, Norwich, Coventry, Leicester, Watford, Blackpool, Doncaster and Palace are amongst the sides thought to have been impressed with Roberts this season.

However, Crewe are also only too aware of how they have lost the likes of Billy Jones and Michael Higdon for little or no money last summer, after their contracts expired.
