Striker Adam Birchall expressed his gratitude to the Gillingham fans for their support following his knee injury.

Birchall had only joined the Gills from Dover the week before damaging his cruciate ligament in a pre-season match against Welling.

The setback will keep him out until the New Year, but Birchall has been comforted by reassuring support from fans and players.

"I've had so many lovely messages from people who are just as frustrated as myself," Birchall told BBC Radio Kent.

"I've only seen positive stuff and I'm grateful to all the people that have sent me messages."

The 26-year-old is likely to be on crutches for a further two months before stepping up his rehabilitation.
