Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler is happy with his side's display against Championship side Brighton in the Carling Cup.

The Gills lost by a single second-half goal to end their Carling Cup run at the first hurdle, yet Hessenthaler wanted to focus on the positives.

"I thought we played well," he told Kent Online. "We are a second division side and were going up against a Championship side. Up until the penalty incident we were starting to get on top.

"What we did was to work hard and try and frustrate them at times and we did that. In the second half I thought we were getting on top and we had a few chances."

But Hessenthaler was forced on the defensive, saying his side were not a dirty team, despite receiving seven yellow cards at the Amex Stadium.

"Stefan Payne, I've got to say it was a straight red," said Hessenthaler. "I thought he should have gone and we lost our discipline a bit. We're competitive, it looked like we were a dirty team in the end but we're not a dirty team."
