Payne: Praised by boss Hessenthaler
Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler says Jack Payne is going nowhere after he scored a stunner in their 2-2 draw with Barnet.
Payne's 30-yard rocket looked set to be the match-winner until Izale McLeod levelled in injury time, denying the Gills all three points.
"Jack would have got more headlines if we had won the game because it was worthy of winning any game. It is just a shame it ended the way it did," said Hessenthaler.
"I have noticed a lot of scouts watching Jack from the last couple of years because he is a good young player. It doesn't surprise me that people are drooling over him but he is loving his football here and he has got a lot of games on his CV at a very young age.
He should be playing at a higher level but we want him to have a big future at Gillingham first."
Hessenthaler was disappointed to have relinquished their perfect start in League Two but admitted that it had been a pleasing start to the campaign overall.
"We are gutted but seven points from nine - I would have taken at the start of the season."
