Money matters to Poyet

Brighton will host Liverpool in the third round of the Carling Cup on Wednesday before welcoming Leeds on Friday evening in the league.

Both games will be screened live on Sky Sports and the financial gains from the fixtures are very attractive to a side that has just been promoted to the Championship.

They will then face Crystal Palace the following Tuesday, making it a testing period for the Seagulls, but Poyet feels playing the games in quick succession is a gamble worth taking.

"We are a team that just got promoted," he told the Daily Telegraph.

"We have the chance to play two games on television.

"With money from those two games we can pay the annual wages of one player. So you know what? We'll take a risk."

Leicester inflicted Brighton's first defeat of the season on Saturday and are heavily tipped for the Championship title after a vast summer spending spree.

Cash windfall

Playing two games in such a short period of time for a cash windfall is something Poyet reckons Sven-Goran Eriksson would not have to do because of the wealth at his disposal.

"Maybe Leicester would not do that," he added.

"I need to manage the squad and the team the right way, to have a decent team against Liverpool and a very, very good team against Leeds on Friday.

"But it's going to be tough."
