Gus Poyet is purring over the potential of Spanish playmaker Vicente after he made his Brighton debut in their Carling Cup defeat to Liverpool.

The 30-year-old winger, who has been capped 38 times by Spain, was a free signing by The Seagulls following his release by Valencia.

Poyet knows the experienced playmaker is lacking match sharpness, although once that returns he feels he could be one of the Championship's best players.

Brighton tackle Leeds on Friday night and the Uruguayan tactician will make a late decision on whether or not the Spanish ace will take part against The Whites.

Fantastic

"It will be fantastic to get him fit for English football, I think we will have one of the best players in the division, without any doubt," commented Poyet.

"He understood how I wanted him to play. He linked it, he passed and created.

"We won't make the mistake in terms of forcing him too quickly and I will ask him how he is and whether he is fit to face Leeds on Friday. He will operate as a playmaker.

"He has the quality, mentality and understanding of the game and while I don't want to compare him to anyone, he plays like a lot of players in Spain do in that position.

"But he has to get used to the pace of the English game and the craziness sometimes of games away from home.

"But if we can control the game like we did in the second half, he will be unbelievable for the football club. Unbelievable."
