McEvilly move falls through

Lee McEvilly's proposed move to Bradford City from Wrexham has been called off by the Yorkshire club over concerns about the striker's fitness.

The 24-year-old looked set to move to Valley Parade at the beginning of the week after agreeing terms on a contract with the club, subject to him passing a medical.

However, The Bantams were keen to take a more thorough look at McEvilly's twice broken foot during pre-season training but the player was unwilling to train with Colin Todd's side without a guarantee of a contract.

McEvilly's reluctance has forced Bradford into cancelling the move after being unable to ensure the Northern Ireland international is fully recovered from two broken metatarsals.

"We have to safeguard the interests of the club as well as the player," Todd said.

"We were very keen on signing Lee but we cannot afford to gamble."

McEvilly has now opted to remain with Wrexham for the next two seasons after putting pen-to-paper on a new contract at The Racecourse Ground.

"I enjoyed my time at Wrexham last year, but was frustrated that I missed so many games due to injury," he told the club's official website.

"I've asked the boss if I can switch my squad number to nine and I hope that'll help me keep away from more problems.

"Now I'm looking forward to starting training on Monday. I just wish I had signed a two-year deal last summer!"
