Chesterfield boss John Sheridan has backed loan signing Leon Clarke to shine after he scored on his debut in the 3-0 win at Bournemouth.

Signed on a three-month loan from Swindon last week, Clarke was making his first appearance since his much publicised fall-out with Paolo Di Canio after a Carling Cup defeat by Southampton at the County Ground a fortnight ago.

"Leon was with me at Oldham Athletic, so I knew what type of player I was signing," said Sheridan.

"From the outside, it appears as though he was treated a bit unfairly, but he's here now and has an opportunity to show what a good player he is."

Clarke scored Chesterfield's third goal from a simple tap-in - his 70th minute strike putting the icing on the visitors' first win since lifting the League Two championship last season.

Goals either side of half-time by Frenchman Alex Mendy and Craig Westcarr set up the 3-0 victory which Sheridan conceded was "not really a true reflection of the game."
