Lowry: On target for Chesterfield
Darlington suffered a shock defeat, Hereford could only draw, while Barnet and Lincoln played out a seven-goal thriller.
Dave Penney's play-off hopefuls were stunned 2-1 by lowly Chester at the Deva Stadium.
Hereford played out a 0-0 stalemate against Bury as they stuttered in their attempts to apply full pressure on the top two.
Elsewhere, Barnet downed Lincoln 5-2, while Chesterfield came from two goals down to win 4-2 against Accrington.
Paul Fairclough's Barnet recorded just their third win in 11 games as they ran out 5-2 winners against Lincoln City at Underhill. Adam Birchall broke the deadlock on 28 minutes, before Albert Adomah dispatched from the penalty spot after Lee Ridley had felled the midfielder in the area. Anthony Thomas struck prior to the interval, and then Birchall struck his second of the game to make it 4-0. Max Porter made it an embarrassing 5-0, while Ben Wright hit a late brace to restore a flicker of pride.
Brentford ended their recent run of wretched form as they piled more misery on bottom-of-the-table Wrexham. Ricky Shakes grabbed a brace for the home side, scoring in each half to seal their second win in eight games.
Chester ended a run of five consecutive losses to claim a surprise 2-1 win over play-off chasers Darlington. Paul Rutherford broke the deadlock for the home side before Ritchie Partridge doubled their advantage on 36 minutes. Stephen Foster struck a late consolation for Darlington, who remain fourth in the table.
Chesterfield secured a marvellous turnaround as they came from two goals down to claim a 4-2 triumph over Accrington. Andrew Procter handed the visitors a goal two-goal lead, opening the scoring on 23 minutes before finishing from the penalty spot. But Lee Richardson's men demonstrated incredible resolve as Derek Niven and then a Mark Roberts own goal put them level. Jamie Lowry put the home side in front in the 59th minute before Jamie Ward put the icing on the cake with five minutes remaining.
Out-of-form sides Dagenham and Shrewsbury shared the spoils as their fixture ended in a 1-1 draw. Andy Cooke handed Shrewsbury, who are now without a win in 11 league games, the lead on 34 minutes at Victoria Road. But Paul Benson secured a point for Dagenham, who had lost three consecutive league games prior to this match, with 20 minutes remaining.
Hereford were unable to claim their fourth consecutive league win as they played out a 0-0 stalemate against Bury - who slip to 18th - at Edgar Street.
League One strugglers Mansfield slumped to their 22nd defeat of the season as they were defeated 2-1 by Grimsby. Peter Till handed the away side the lead, before Nathan Arnold levelled; however Danny Boshell struck a 74th minute winner for Grimsby.
Wycombe rectified a poor run of form - four losses in their previous five games prior to Saturday's encounter - to claim a 1-0 triumph at Morecambe. Stefan Oakes grabbed the only goal of the game on 36 minutes, slotting past goalkeeper Scott Davies.
Notts County shocked play-off hopefuls Rochdale as Ian McParland's side recorded their first win in six games with a 1-0 success. Michael Johnson scored the only goal of the game at Meadow Lane, putting past goalkeeper Tommy Lee on 28 minutes.
Bradford claimed an away point against Rotherham as their encounter at Millmoor ended 1-1. Joe Colbeck broke the deadlock for the visitors, but Chris O'Grady restored parity on 65 minutes.
