Jimmy Quinn enjoyed a winning start as Bournemouth boss as the League Two side overcame League One Bristol Rovers 3-0 in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Elsewhere, Brighton saw off Northampton and Colchester dumped out Millwall.
New Bournemouth chief Quinn got off to the best start with a convincing win over Bristol Rovers at the Fitness First Stadium.
Goals from Jeff Goulding (38), Sammy Igoe (67) and Danny Hollands (76) were enough to give the Cherries a morale-boosting victory.
League two leaders Dagenham & Redbridge maintained their fine form with a 4-2 win over struggling Barnet.
Paul Benson fired the hosts in front after just four minutes, but two goals from Adam Birchall (6, 18) turned the game on its head.
Mark Nwokeji drew Dagenham level on 28 minutes before Benson's second of the contest on 34 minutes and Glen Southam's penalty 15 minutes from time completed the comeback.
Leyton Orient got the better of Southend after a six-goal thriller at Roots Hall.
Lee Sawyer gave Southend an early lead (13), but two quick-fire goals from Ryan Jarvis (20) and Adam Chambers (25) put Orient in front.
Sawyer drew Southend level on 34 minutes before goals from John Melligan (48) and Adam Boyd's penalty (86) gave Martin Ling's men a place in the second round.
Brentford beat Yeovil 4-2 on penalties after the tie ended 2-2 during 90 minutes.
Yeovil came from two goals down with goals from Marc Bircham (39) and Gavin Tomlin's 77th minute penalty cancelling out Glenn Poole's penalty (28) and Kevin O'Connor's 37th minute goal.
Ryan Dickson scored the winning penalty after Yeovil missed three of the spot-kicks.
Ben Davies' last-gasp goal earned Shrewsbury a 2-1 win at Exeter.
Kevin McIntyre (9) gave the in-form Shrews an early lead only for Ryan Harley (22) to draw the hosts level.
The tie looked set to go to penalties until Davies popped up with the winner in the final minute.
Kevin McLeod's second half goal booked Brighton's place in the second after a 1-0 win at Northampton.
Millwall crashed out to Colchester at The Den after David Perkins's early goal after just eight minutes gave the visitors a 1-0 win.
League One Swindon survived a scare against Aldershot prevailing 7-6 on penalties after a 2-2 with the League Two side.
Simon Cox (32) gave Swindon the lead, but Rob Elvins equalised for the home side right on the stroke of half-time.
Scott Davies gave Aldershot the lead from the penalty spot on 48 minutes, but Jerel Ifil forced the game into penalties with an 83rd minute leveller.
Mark Marshall scored the winning spot-kick after Junior Osborne missed for Aldershot.
