Jamie Ward scored a hat-trick as Chesterfield emphatically ended a six-game winless run with a thumping 5-1 victory over Aldershot.

The Spireites had previously won just once at Saltergate this season but got back to form in stunning style.

Jack Lester set Lee Richardson's side on their way before Ward opened his account with a 41st-minute penalty.

Ward is currently in talks over a new contract with the League Two side and did his bargaining position no harm at all by adding two more after the break.

Kirk Hudson briefly gave the Shots hope when he made it 2-1 after 50 minutes but Ward quickly restored Chesterfield's two-goal lead and completed the rout after substitute Derek Niven had also got on the scoresheet.

The result extended Aldershot's wait for a win to five games as Chesterfield moved to within a point of them in mid-table.
