Barnet blew several chances to claim a point as Matt Gill handed Exeter a narrow 1-0 victory at Underhill.

The midfielder latched onto Marcus Stewart's pinpoint cross to smash the ball past Bees goalkeeper Lee Harrison and hand Paul Tisdale's men all three points.

The visitors were the brighter side in the opening exchanges with Matt Taylor and Dean Moxey going close to giving the Grecians the lead.

Barnet's Michael Townsend - who made his debut against Wycombe on Tuesday - almost opened his goalscoring account for the club after 20 minutes but headed Nicky Deverdics' corner inches over the crossbar.

Adam Stansfield then missed two gilt-edged chances to put the home side ahead, firing wide after 17 minutes before rattling the bar 10 minutes later.

Bees substitute Luke Medley could have put the home side ahead shortly after the break but blazed over when well placed before Gill broke Bees hearts after 72 minutes when he lost his marker at the far post to poke home.
