Chesterfield have opened talks with star striker Jamie Ward over a new deal at Saltergate.

Ward's goalscoring exploits have attracted interest from a number of other clubs, with Derby and Sheffield United both credited with an interest in the former Aston Villa youngster.

The 22-year-old's current contract expires at the end of the season and the club are keen to secure him.

However, Spireites boss Lee Richardson is remaining realistic over his side's chances of keeping Ward.

"We are in discussions with Jamie about a new contract. That's all we can really say at the moment," said Richardson.

"At every level of football everybody has their price.

"If Jamie doesn't want to sign the contract, which will be a good one for us, then he has that right and we can't force him to.

"The only thing that we will rest assured on is that, if he decides to move on, then whoever takes him will have to pay compensation because he is under 24."
