Manchester City have turned down Morecambe's request to extend the loan of Ryan McGivern.

The promising defender had spent the past month on loan at Christie Park and Sammy McIlroy was keen to hang on to the youngster.

The Morecambe boss was optimistic of having McGivern in his squad for Saturday's FA Cup second-round tie against Cheltenham Town.

But McIlroy has confirmed that City want to keep hold of McGivern as manager Mark Hughes is looking to assess his progress.

Disappointing

"Ryan won't be coming back at this stage now," McIlroy told the club's official website.

"Manchester City want to keep him around the first-team squad and keep an eye on him. It is disappointing because he has done well here for us and was getting better all the time.''

McIlroy is now looking at other options as he seeks to add to his squad before the loan window closes on Thursday.

He added: "I am looking at a couple of other options and will be speaking to the chairman today to try and sort something out.''
