Grant Holt's 20th goal of the season was enough to end Shrewsbury's run of three straight league defeats and see off battling Bury 1-0, who had Efe Sodje sent off in the first half for an elbow on Michael Symes.

Elliott Bennett had a glorious chance for the visitors in first-half stoppage-time but Luke Daniels saved with his legs, and then the same player hit the side-netting when clean through after 70 minutes.

Shrewsbury made hard work of breaking down Bury's packed defence with goalkeeper Wayne Brown never severely tested.

But when Brown tipped away Richard Walker's shot, Ben Davies centred following the corner and Holt floated a 76th-minute header over Brown and into the far corner.

Bury fought back in the final minutes and twice went close from corners, but it was Brown who was again in action to make two smart saves from Walker in stoppage time.
