Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson hopes striker Jamie Ward will remain at Saltergate, having rejected the chance to join Championship outfit Barnsley earlier this week.

The former Torquay United striker's proposed move to the Tykes collapsed after failing to agree personal terms and Richardson told skysports.com he was delighted to hear the news.

He said: "I was pleased to hear that Jamie's move had broken down.

"As a manager of a lower league club there always has to be a balance between producing profits from the sale of promising young players, which we have done in recent years with the sale of Caleb Folan, and keeping your best players at the club.

"It's part of the job, but we also want to do well in the league, so it is pleasing for me because for the time being at least he will be a Chesterfield player.

"We've also managed to bring in a player that will give us another dimension in the final third with Martin Gritton."

Stupid

The transfer window format has often been slated by managers across the nation and Richardson believes it is a poor policy which should be abandoned.

He added: "I think this transfer window format has been devised by someone in the media because it just gives the press something to talk about. I'm not a fan.

"It just so happens that the transfer window has opened now, but we have wanted to make some additions to the squad for a while now, but due to the stupid regulations we haven't been able to do so.

"Now that the silly window is open we can look to do some business and we'd like to do it sooner rather than later."
