Stuart Elliott's first goal for Grimsby earned the Mariners a 1-1 draw against high-flying Dagenham.

The on-loan winger slotted home after 19 minutes to put the Mike Newell's men ahead only for Jon Nurse to fire home a 36th-minute equaliser.

Both sides went close in the opening minutes - Town midfielder Peter Bore broke the offside trap and flicked the ball past Daggers goalkeeper Tony Roberts only to see his shot go narrowly wide of a post. And Dagenham midfielder Solomon Taiwo then fired wide from a Matt Ritchie cross.

Grimsby opened the scoring when Dean Sinclair took the ball off defender Danny Foster before rounding Roberts and passing to Elliot to apply the finishing touch.

Adam Proudlock should have doubled Town's lead when he burst clear on goal but he fired a shot straight at the legs of Roberts.

And Grimsby were made to pay for that miss when Nurse picked up a pass from Ben Strevens before striking a left-foot shot from the edge of the box to beat Phil Barnes at his near post.
