Dean Windass is eager to launch his management career after applying for the vacancy with League Two strugglers Grimsby Town.

Windass officially called time on his playing days on Monday and has been on the lookout for a new challenge after parting company with Darlington last month.

The 40-year-old spent a brief spell as player-coach with the Quakers under Colin Todd before the duo were shown the door following a nine-game winless run.

Grimsby sacked Mike Newell on Sunday following a fourth successive defeat which has seen them slide into the relegation zone.

Opportunity

Windass said: "I have applied for the job at Grimsby. The fact I've just retired as a player was purely coincidental, but this is too good an opportunity for me to let it pass by.

"I was disappointed not to get the chance at Darlington when (manager) Colin (Todd) left and I've always said I wanted to be a manager, to make my own decisions and be my own man. I've said that for many years now.

"Grimsby would be a great club for me to start my managerial career and I believe I've got the hunger and attributes to make a real success of it."

Windass, a former player with hometown club Hull City, Bradford and Middlesbrough among others, officially hung up his boots on Monday.

He played his last league game for Darlington in a 2-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in September before both he and Todd left the club in the wake of the 1-1 draw at Grimsby the following weekend.
