Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi is hoping on-loan goalkeeper Steve Phillips will accept the club's offer to join permanently.

Phillips is currently on a two-month loan from Bristol Rovers and is expected to leave the League One club on a free transfer during the January window.

Shrewsbury Town, where he spent a loan spell earlier this season, are interested in a deal, while clubs in the SPL are also keeping tabs on the 31-year-old.

However, Gradi is aiming to beat other clubs to the punch after offering Phillips a deal and holding 'positive' talks with the keeper.

"We would like to keep him with us and I have made him an offer which I think he finds accepted for this division," Gradi told the club's official website.

"We had positive talks and, hopefully, if he can sort out one or two things with Bristol Rovers then he will be pleased to sign with us.

"He is being paid more at Bristol than he is here, so he will look to resolve things and try to make up the difference.

"I think it is good that an experienced player wants to come here. It is good for the younger lads to know that this is a decent club because they are non-the-wiser.

"Those who leave us, usually want to come back and Steve is very experienced and knows the culture of other clubs."
