Graham Turner is back in charge of Hereford United after his replacement John Trewick was sacked on Monday.

Long-serving manager Turner stepped down last year after 730 games in charge following the club's relegation from League One.

However, Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Macclesfield, the club's fourth in five league matches, proved to be Trewick's last game at the helm.

Hereford have confirmed that Turner's return to management is a short-term measure and that a decision over Trewick's long-term successor will be made in due course.

Relieved

"In a meeting this morning with chairman Graham Turner, John Trewick was informed that he was to be relieved of his duties as Hereford United manager," read a statement on the club's official website.

"During the meeting John was given the reason why Graham felt it was necessary to resume management control of the playing staff at this time.

"John understood the reasons and further discussions about the situation will take place next week.

"The club would like to place on record our thanks for the considerable hard work he has put into the club both, as manager and coach.

"Graham Turner will take over the manager's responsibilities in the short term, a decision will then be made about the long term future."

Acceptance

Trewick had hoped for a season of stabilisation following relegation and accepts the club's reasons for a change at the helm.

"I was given the reasons behind the decision which I understand and accept," said Trewick.

"The most important thing to me is the continued Football League status of Hereford. I've invested too much time at the club to see it jeopardised.

"This season was always going to be a time of readjustment and stabilisation. After a poor start and inconsistent results the season turned out just as difficult and challenging as I thought it might be following relegation last season.

"However, with over a quarter of the season remaining, Hereford are 11 points clear of the relegation zone. I don't believe given all the recent circumstances that too much more could have been achieved."
