Southend manager Paul Sturrock did not watch the penalty shoot-out as his side beat Gillingham in the JPT.

Blair Sturrock, the son of the manager, scored the winning penalty for a 4-3 win after a goalless 90 minutes.

"I told the goalkeeper what I wanted him to do and then spoke to the players and then went to the dressing room," said Sturrock senior. "I was counting the shouts and thought it was 5-5 - I didn't know Blair had scored."

But Sturrock was unhappy with the way his team played following two good performances away from Roots Hall.

"It was an even contest and 0-0 was always on the cards. Gillingham are the away team and I have to give them credit," he said. "I'm very disappointed with the performance. We have not yet found a defensive formula and I want to turn this place into a fortress."

He added: "I would have wanted a better performance from the team. Away from home we have been very competitive and looked a very good side, but at home we have not reached those heights."
