Port Vale striker Justin Richards insists that there is still room for improvement, despite an impressive start to the season.

The Valiants have secured seven points from a possible 12 so far this season and managed to dump Championship high-flyers QPR out of the Carling Cup as well.

However, former Cheltenham striker Richards is confident Vale can continue on an upward curve en route to a potential promotion push.

"You can always improve on things and if we hadn't conceded in the last few minutes against Chesterfield that would have put more points on the board and pushed us into the top three," Richards told skysports.com.

"However, apart from that and the disappointing result against Torquay, it has been a very good start to the season for us.

"There is still more to come from this side and we are just focusing on going about our business in a quiet manner, picking up as many points as we can and hopefully that will put us up there when May comes around."

The 29-year-old has scored four goals in seven games since joining the Valiants over the summer, but will not be resting on his laurels.

Richards, who scored both goals in Tuesday night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Rochdale, added: "I'm happy to have put my name on the score sheet a couple of times, but I'd have liked to have done so a bit more.

"I've just got to continue to keep working hard and hopefully that will bring more goals with it."
