Southend manager Paul Sturrock was glad his side were able to hang on after their 2-1 home win over Torquay.

First-half strikes from Anthony Grant and Josh Simpson but the Shrimpers in control but they were fight for the win after Chris Zebroski's 78th minute strike for the Gulls.

Sturrock said: "The team played very well in the first half but the tactical change in their system caused us concern late on.

"Over the 90 minutes and in the first half we could have be bit more ahead. In the second half they had have a couple of chances, and so have we, but the last 20 minutes was all hands to the pumps.

"I thought they would do a smash and grab at the end but we were able to hold on.

"I thought Grant and Simpson's goals were quality finishes. With Grant it took a lot of guts to stay with it after losing his friends last year, but now he is reaping the benefits."
