Basham: Bagged a brace for Luton
The magic of the FA Cup was alive and kicking on Saturday, with round one offering up a few shocks.
Kettering, Oxford United and Bath City all claimed memorable scalps, while the likes of Luton, Fleetwood, Gateshead and Sutton United did the non-league proud.
Elsewhere, MK Dons, Exeter, Leeds and Hereford ensured that their names go into the hat for the second round draw.
Blue Square North outfit Bath City took advantage of Grimsby's faltering form as they secured a 2-0 win at Blundell Park.
Chris Holland and Darren Edwards did the damage either side of half-time to send the Mariners packing.
Luton may be flying high in the Blue Square Premier but they faced a tough task against League Two promotion-chasers Rochdale.
So it proved, with the Hatters throwing away a three-goal lead to be held 3-3 at Kenilworth Road.
A Steve Basham brace and another from Adam Newton had Luton in control, but Craig Dawson and two late efforts from Joe Thompson hauled Dale level.
Kettering travelled to Hartlepool boasting a decent recent record on the road and duly ground out a 1-0 win.
Moses Ashikodi proved to the hero for the Conference side as his solitary strike settled matters at Victoria Park.
Yeovil built a reputation as FA Cup giant killers during their days in the non-league, but they came unstuck at Oxford United this time around.
The Blue Square Premier league leaders saw a 55th-minute effort from Jack Midson see them safely through.
Gateshead struck first against Andy Scott's Brentford but were ultimately left to snatch a dramatic 2-2 draw.
A Lewis Price own goal put the hosts in front, but Carl Cort levelled for the Bees shortly after the hour mark and Kevin O'Connor had them in front moments later.
It was then left to Peter Winn to bag a last-minute equaliser and ensure the two sides must try all over again.
Northampton were pushed all the way by Conference North outfit Fleetwood Town and will be mightily relieved to have emerged with a 2-1 victory.
A brace from Luke Guttridge rescued the Cobblers, ensuring Sean Clancy's effort shortly before the interval counted for nothing.
Sutton United will forever be associated with cup upsets, but they were unable to repeat the heroics of their past at Hereford.
Mathieu Manset, who would later be dismissed, put the Bulls on their way at Edgar Street and Ryan Valentine wrapped things up from the penalty spot.
Nuneaton Town, of the Southern League Premier Division, saw their cup dreams ended in spectacular style by Exeter City.
Matt Taylor, with two, Barry Corr and Guy Hadland saw the Grecians ease to a 4-0 win.
Gillingham were also comprehensive victors this weekend, seeing off League One rivals Southend 3-0 at Priestfield.
Curtis Weston, Fabian Brandy and Mark Bentley found the target for Mark Stimson's side.
MK Dons needed just one goal to see off Macclesfield, with Lewis Gobern stepping off the bench to see off the Silkmen.
Leeds overcame Oldham in Saturday's late kick-off, with the Whites claiming a 2-0 win at Boundary Park.
Jonny Howson and Mike Grella got the goals for the runaway League One leaders.
