Leaders Walsall were held to a 1-1 draw by Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.
Hector Sam had put Richard Money's side ahead on 27 minutes but they had to settle for a point as Chris Llewellyn netted an equaliser (68).
Swindon and Milton Keynes Dons both closed the gap on Walsall with wins over Bristol Rovers and Wycombe respectively.
Paul Sturrock's Swindon were 2-1 winners as goals from Lucas Jutkiewicz (15) and Aaron Brown (17) cancelled out Richard Walker's opener on 12 minutes.
Izale McLeod bagged a brace as MK Dons ran out to a 3-1 success at home to fellow promotion chasers Wycombe.
Keith Andrews started to scoring on 17 minutes before McLeod's first from the penalty spot (25).
Tommy Mooney pulled one back (31) but Tommy Docherty was sent off on 80 minutes and McLeod scored his second with three minutes remaining.
Macclesfield were denied their third win of the season as Accrington Stanley's Andrew Mangan scored a late, late equaliser.
Stanley took the lead through Leighton McGiven (27) before Jamie Tolley's equaliser just after the break.
Martin Bullock gave Paul Ince's side their first lead of the game on 73 minutes but Joe Jacobson pulled the visitors level two minutes later.
John Murphy looked to have scored the winner (89) before Mangan silenced the home fans late on.
The relegation six-pointer between Torquay and Boston ended in a 1-0 win for Steve Evans' side.
Anthony Elding scored the only goal (41) but Boston ended the game with nine men as Drewe Broughton and David Galbraith were both sent off.
Bury came out on top in the local derby against Stockport with Glynn Hurst (2) and Andy Bishop (66) scoring the goals.
Alan White scored the only goal for Notts County with six minutes remaining in their game at Darlington.
Chester City were away winners at Peterborough thanks to Jonathan Walters (9) and a Mark Arber own goal (40).
Barnet beat Mansfield 2-1 at Underhill, Ismail Yakubu (46) and Adam Gross (54) scoring the goals for the hosts. Richie Barker pulled one back for Mansfield late on.
Shrewsbury were comfortable 3-0 winners over Hereford at Gay Meadow in one of two early kick-offs in League Two.
Andy Cooke scored either side of half-time (35 & 66) to put the home side in complete control.
Dean Beckwith was sent off for Hereford on 76 minutes and David Edwards netted a third for Shrewsbury shortly after.
Lincoln City continued their promotion push with a 2-0 win over rivals Grimsby in the second early kick-off.
League Two top scorer Jamie Forrester opened the scoring just before the break and Grimsby's chances of a result were dealt a blow when Gary Jones was sent off for violent conduct.
Lee Frecklington netted the second for Lincoln on 73 minutes.
