Skysports.com understands Walsall captain Andy Butler is poised to sign a new deal at the club.

Butler has been a revelation for Walsall since his arrival on a free transfer in November and he played a key role in helping the Saddlers secure League One survival.

The central defender was rewarded for his impressive form by clearing the boards at the club's end of season player awards, winning the Player of the Year prize and the Players' Player of the Season award.

The 27-year-old's form is believed to have alerted a number of Championship clubs and League One sides to his possible availability this summer.

Butler's deal expired earlier this week and the club were determined to keep hold of the former Huddersfield man.

Butler has enjoyed his time at Walsall and he is now ready to sign a long-term deal with the Saddlers as they begin plans to rebuild their squad for next season.
