Walsall boss Dean Smith admitted Jon Macken returned to the starting XI too quickly following his side's loss to Brentford.

Macken was given his first start since August 20 after recovering from an ankle injury, but was unable to make an impression in the game and was substituted seven minutes after half-time.

Smith told the Express & Star: "I took a bit of a gamble with Jon Macken.

"He'd not trained all week but he trained on Friday and I thought with his experience we'll throw him in but he clearly needed a few days before he came back.

"He's okay, I took him off just to try to change the tempo of the game."
