Delighted Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner praised his players after they overcame losing two experienced defenders to beat Port Vale 3-2.

Skipper Ian Sharps had to be replaced by Reuben Hazell after straining his calf in the warm-up, with 18-year-old Connor Goldson coming on for hamstring injury victim Shane Cansdell-Sherriff after just 21 minutes.

But Turner's men had swept into a two-goal lead before Cansdell-Sherriff's departure and were ultimately good value for a fifth win in their last six league games.

Turner said: "Our squad is small so we need people who can come in and do a job when we get injuries. I was very pleased with how Reuben and Connor performed in a difficult game.

"Reuben has had to wait for his chance, but he did very well and I was also pleased with Connor. He was a bit naive at times, but he's got the pace to get himself out of trouble and he did that."

He added: "It should have been simpler than we made it. At 2-0 up we were comfortable, but conceded a goal out of nothing and that gave the Vale players a lift and the crowd a lift."
