Graham Turner was critical of his Shrewsbury side's defending after their Carling Cup third-round 3-1 loss at Arsenal.

James Collins' header had given the Shrews an early lead at the Emirates on Tuesday night, but first club goals for Kieran Gibbs, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Yossi Benayoun helped to put the Gunners in the draw for the fourth round.

Despite the gulf in divisions, Turner felt his rearguard were punished for failing to do the basics and told the club's official website: "We might well have come in at half-time a couple of goals ahead and I was disappointed with the manner in which we conceded the first goal.

"It was straight-forward defending where we should have stopped the cross coming in and then defended it better at the back post.

"In the second half we allowed ourselves to be dominated but by some very good players. You have to recognise that they pass the ball very well and we didn't get close enough to stop them."

However, Turner commended his side's endeavour in reaching the third round and said: "There were some tired legs out there as the lads have worked extremely hard.

It's been a nice run where we've had a couple of big scalps and we haven't been disgraced here."
