Stockport County look set to win the race for Linfield striker Peter Thompson.

The two clubs have agreed a fee, believed to be in the region of £100,000, for the Northern Ireland international, who will now hold talks at Edgeley Park.

Thompson was in demand after scoring 44 times last season to lead Linfield to a third straight league and cup double.

An offer from Norwich City was rejected, while a number of clubs in Scotland had also been linked with the 24-year-old.

"An offer for the player was received from Norwich but the club's management committee was unable to accept the terms," said a statement from Linfield.

It added: "Linfield Football Club would like to place on record the club's appreciation of the outstanding contribution made by Peter to the club's successes in recent years."
