Peterborough winger George Boyd insists avoiding relegation remains their main aim this season, despite a solid start to the new campaign.

The London Road outfit have adapted to life in the Championship with relative ease following their League One play-off final success back in May, picking up seven points from a possible 15 so far.

However, despite their lofty position in the top half of the table, the 25-year-old told no-one is getting carried away just yet by their recent good form.

He said: "I think that first and foremost we want to stay in this division because we know how tough that can be in itself, but we are just trying to not get too far ahead of ourselves this season.

"We've set a target of wins that we feel will make sure we are safe from relegation and if we get that early then you never know what can happen, but safety is definitely our first target."

Only five of the 16 selected for Posh's 2-0 defeat at Brighton last time out played for the club in the Championship two years ago, when they finished bottom of the table, and Boyd is aware his experience could prove to be vital in their bid to beat the drop this time round.

He said: "I'm sure that we can use our experience from last time we were in the Championship and not make the same mistakes again.

"If we don't then we will obviously go down again, but the likes of Grant McCann and myself can help the younger lads through it because they haven't experienced Championship football before.

"We've got a much younger squad than last time we were here and I'm sure that we will do much better this time round."
