The promotion hopefuls in League One will be eager to start the season on a high note when the campaign gets underway with a full programme on Saturday.

Fallen giants Sheffield United will be under the microscope when they begin life in the third tier with a trip to Oldham Athletic and will be hoping for a bright start under new manager Danny Wilson as they bid to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking this season.

United's fierce city rivals Sheffield Wednesday are tipped among the favourites for promotion and their first test comes at home as they entertain Rochdale at Hillsborough.

Last season's League Two champions Chesterfield get their campaign underway with a trip to Tranmere, who will be looking to retain their third tier status after finishing a disappointing 17th last term.

Huddersfield will be hoping this year is finally their year after falling at the final hurdle and missing out on promotion last term, and are likely to provide a tough test for promoted Bury at the Galpharm Stadium.

Relegated Scunthorpe and promoted Wycombe will meet as two League One newcomers joining from opposite directions when they clash at Adams Park.

Also new to the division are Preston North End, who slipped out of the Championship last term and will be hoping to bounce straight back this season, with a home encounter against Colchester marking their first hurdle.

MK Dons came close to promotion last season but fell at the play-offs, and will be looking to mount another push this campaign, starting at home to Hartlepool.

Bournemouth also suffered play-off heartache last term, something they will be keen to put behind them when they make the trip to fellow promotion hopefuls Charlton.

After just missing out on the play-offs last season, Exeter face a gentle opener against promoted Stevenage.

Walsall narrowly sidestepped the drop and will hope to better their 20th-placed finish this term, with a home clash against Leyton Orient on the agenda this weekend.

Martin Allen gets his first full season as manager at Notts County underway with a trip to Carlisle, who will be looking to finish in the top half of the table again this year.

After struggling last term, Yeovil will be aiming for a fresh start when they visit Brentford at Griffin Park.
