Charlton and Notts County are the early League One pacesetters, but it was a difficult first day back in the division for Preston North End.

Jeff Hughes opened the scoring in Notts County's 3-0 win at Carlisle and an own goal from Francois Zoko doubled their advantage with 32 minutes gone. Lee Hughes made it three shortly before the break.

Charlton are among the expected frontrunners this term, and they got off to a solid start with a 3-0 win over Bournemouth at the Valley, with Dale Stephens grabbing a brace.

Sheffield Wednesday are also among the favourites for promotion, and they made a comfortable winning start at home to Rochdale, with Rob Jones and a David Prutton screamer sealing a 2-0 success.

At Boundary Park, Sheffield United showed no signs of getting to grips with their new division, cruising to a 2-0 win over Oldham through goals from Harry Maguire and Richard Cresswell.

Preston, also relegated form the Championship last term, had no such luck, however, going down 4-2 at home to Colchester, who had an Ian Henderson brace help them towards a creditable three points.

At Adams Park, James Tunnicliffe's opener for Wycombe was cancelled out by Scunthorpe's Michael Nelson in a 1-1 draw.

Huddersfield are favourites for many, but they made a disappointing start, being held 1-1 by Bury at the Galpharm Stadium. Gary Roberts finally broke the deadlock on 65 minutes but it was not to be enough as Ryan Lowe levelled 11 minutes later.

Elsewhere, MK Dons' promotion hopes took an early hit as they were held to a 2-2 home draw with Hartlepool.

Luke Chadwick levelled for the hosts after Adam Boyd had opened the scoring, and the appropriately named James Poole thought he had grabbed an 85th minute winner, only for Jabo Ibehre to salvage a point for Dons.

Meanwhile, new boys Chesterfield suffered defeat at Prenton Park, where Robbie Weir scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Tranmere.

Elsewhere, Walsall got off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at the Banks's Stadium, with Adam Chambers netting the only goal.

Brentford will be pleased with their start, as a goal in either half from Gary Alexander and Shaleum Logan earned a 2-0 win over Yeovil Town at Griffin Park.

Finally, the league's only goalless draw on the opening day took place at Broadhall Way, where Stevenage were held 0-0 at home to Exeter City.
