Notts County boss Martin Allen hailed his side for what he felt was a "superb" performance despite their 2-0 defeat at Preston.

The game was heading for a goalless draw until Brian McLean rose highest from an 83rd-minute corner, and the hosts wrapped up the points when goalkeeper Iain Turner unleashed a huge kick which bounced over opposite number Stuart Nelson - under pressure from Neil Mellor - and into the net.

But Allen refused to be too downbeat, saying: "I thought my team played much better, it was much better than it was last week at Sheffield (Wednesday). I thought we were superb to be honest.

"We've had good opportunities in the final third but to come here with two people making their debuts was absolutely superb. Yet to lose from a corner kick after we hadn't looked in any trouble at all was difficult. It's a difficult place to come and win but we weathered their storm."

Allen's son Charlie started the clash, and the County boss continued: "I was very proud of Charlie but I have to admit it was difficult.

"I thought he was absolutely superb but there's a couple of areas of his game he needs to improve on. But to think it was only seven or eight months ago he was working on a building site after coming back from playing in Iceland."
