Macclesfield boss Gary Simpson was disappointed his side had not taken anything from the 2-0 defeat at Cheltenham.

Jeff Goulding's first-half penalty and a late Jimmy Spencer effort secured the points for the Robins in Saturday's League Two clash at Whaddon Road.

"We have had a few home truths," Simpson said. "It wasn't a game we should have lost but they got a bit of a break with the penalty. That has put us on the back foot.

"We have chucked everything forward in the second half and they have done us on the break. We have had the dominance in the second half but haven't worked the keeper enough.

"When things have come in the box we have been flat-footed and been watching rather than attacking it. Games are won in both boxes and we need to learn to compete in both boxes.

"There is a time to play and a time not to play. We may have to go a bit long at times when we have to ease the pressure. But they are a young side and still learning. We've had a tough start with some long trips but when the confidence is high as it was a few games ago - you can blow Wimbledon away but come unstuck against Torquay. We have gifted them this, Cheltenham have not had to work, we have gifted them it."
