Macclesfield goalscoring hero Ben Tomlinson says his new team - who beat Northampton 3-1 - are on the rise under manager Gary Simpson.

Tomlinson grabbed the opener in the home win over Northampton when he pounced on a fluffed clearance from Cobblers goalkeeper Sam Walker to power home from 20 yards in the 36th minute.

Northampton drew level just before the break through Marlon Jackson, but Tomlinson grabbed his second in the 83rd minute and then supplied the final pass for substitute Colin Daniel to nail the Cobblers with his first touch five minutes later.

Tomlinson said: "I've never played in the league before so I can't really make a comparison, all I can say is that I've never played against a team that has as much quality as we do at Mac.

"The spirit in the dressing room is just fantastic. There's so much banter flying around it's just great to be in there."

Boss Simpson added: "It looks as if I've unearthed another. I was delighted that the man he replaced, Emile Sinclair, scored two for Peterborough because the lad really deserved it, but it looks as if Ben and the other strikers we've got can step into his shoes."
