Weir: Still going strong

Rangers boss Walter Smith has rewarded veteran defenders David Weir and Christian Dailly with new deals at Ibrox.

The Scotland international duo, who helped Rangers to a domestic cup double, runners-up spot in the SPL and the final of the Uefa Cup last season, have both agreed 12-month contracts.

Dailly, 34, joined Rangers from West Ham in January and was also deployed by Smith in midfield, while Weir played 68 games for club and country in a remarkable campaign.

"I've enjoyed every minute since I've been up here. Football-wise there wasn't any decision to make," said Weir, whose defensive partnership with Carlos Cuellar was critical to Rangers' success last season.

"As soon as the manager said he wanted me to stay for another year I was delighted," the former Everton centre-back told Rangers' website.

"I didn't think I'd be here for two-and-a-half years. In football you can't afford to look too far ahead, especially at my age.

"So initially it was just a short-term deal but I'm delighted now that it has stretched and stretched."

Weir hopes to be just as active when Rangers' new season starts later this month with a Champions League qualifier against Santa Coloma or FBK Kaunas.
