Jose Goncalves has joined Nurnberg on loan after signing a new contract at Hearts.

The Portugal Under 21 international had 12 months remaining on his Tynecastle deal, but has agreed an extension through to 2010.

However, he has now accepted a loan move to Nurnberg, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season.

Nurnberg have the option to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign for a figure reputed to be £1million.

The decision to extend Goncalves' contract ensures Hearts will receive a fee for the defender, rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

Goncalves joined the SPL club from Swiss side FC Thun in January 2006 and he has made 47 appearances for the Jambos.
