New Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo began his tenure at Tynecastle by setting his sights on toppling the Old Firm.

The Jambos divided Celtic and Rangers in 2006 and the club's majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov has been striving for that success and more since - leading to seven managers exiting Tynecastle during his controversial reign.

Romanov managed to tempt Laszlo from his post as boss of the Uganda national team and now the Romanian-born Hungarian is confident he can upset the Scottish top two.

"Celtic and Rangers are the two biggest clubs in Scotland and have very good international players," he said.

"But we must compete against them and we must work very hard for this.

"This is not a dream - it's possible than we can do everything to be top.

"I don't think Mr Romanov is looking to sack anybody who doesn't reach first place.

"But I don't want to be eighth, seventh or even third place - I want to be first."

Laszlo looked even further ahead and tipped his batch of players, and more possible recruits, to show they have the ability as a team in future to compete with top European clubs on the biggest stage.

He said: "We have good quality players and we will look at what is possible in the market.

"We can't compete with Bayern Munich, Juventus, Manchester United and maybe Arsenal just now.

"But we would like to make this level one day."
