Cuellar: Staying put

Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar insists he has no desire to leave the club this summer.

The Spaniard has become a fans' favourite at Ibrox just 12 months after arriving in Glasgow from Osasuna, and his eye-catching performances have drawn admiring glances from a host of Europe's top clubs.

However, the centre-half has revealed that he wants to remain with Walter Smith's men for the foreseeable future.

"I want to stay here for many years. I like the feeling I have with the supporters and that's very important," Cuellar told the Daily Record.

Proud

"I'm very proud to have this support and it encourages me to go out and play for them.

"I've never experienced such warmth in my career before and it's very special.

'I'm very happy at Rangers and the supporters are one of the reasons. The club is fantastic and each year we have the chance to play in the Champions League.

"Last season was my best as a professional player but I hope this season will be even better."

Dream

With his stock most definitely on the rise, Cuellar went on to admit that he has set himself the personal target of breaking into the Spain squad next season.

"I'd love to go and join these players because it is my dream to play for the national team," he said.

"It is up to me. If I have another good season, I think I have a chance."

The 26-year-old is also aware that his chances of international recognition could rest on Rangers' involvement in the UEFA Champions League.

"The Champions League qualifying games can be nervous and they can be difficult but we have good confidence in the squad and I believe we are favourites to go through," he said ahead of Wednesday's qualifying fixture against Lithuanian minnows Kaunas.

"I loved the games in Europe last season and every player wants to play against the best in the world."
