Motherwell manager Jim Gannon would be prepared to allow midfielder Jim O'Brien to join Aberdeen.

Dons boss Mark McGhee, who bought the 22-year-old during his time in charge at Fir Park, has sounded his interest in a reunion after drawing up a wanted list of signings.

O'Brien will be a free agent in the summer as his contract expires and Motherwell may therefore look to cash in when the transfer window opens in January.

Gannon rates the ex-Celtic player highly, but would not stand in his way if he wanted to move to Aberdeen.

The Motherwell boss said in the Daily Record: "One of my principles is always to inform players and never to inhibit somebody's potential to grow - we have a responsibility to each player to make sure they make the very best out of themselves.

"If that is with another club we should respect their wishes."
