Kilmarnock manager Jimmy Calderwood believes the Rugby Park club will offer striker Kevin Kyle extended terms.

The experienced hit-man is out of contract in the summer and will be a free agent unless he signs a fresh contract.

Kyle recently angered Calderwood after he linked up with Russian club Spartak Nalchik for a trial match without informing the Killie boss.

The 28-year-old had permission to travel and he has now held clear-the-air talks with Calderwood following his unexpected departure.

A groin strain picked up in the match meant Kyle missed Killie's weekend defeat, along with being unable to face Rangers in SPL action on Tuesday.

Calderwood does not believe the injury to be too serious and thinks he will be fit to face Celtic in the Scottish Cup this coming weekend.

Permission

"Kyle had been given permission to go but I was annoyed at him for not letting me know he was away," Calderwood said.

"He could have sent me a text message or something but I have cleared the air with him.

"He is at hospital this morning and we will see how the damage is but we expect him to be okay for Saturday.

"But I talked to the chairman and told him that I think he should go and talk to Kevin and offer him a new contract and I think that's what they are going to do.

"I like Kevin, he is looking a lot fitter and in the last few weeks he was coming to form and most teams in Scotland would love to have that Kevin.

Shock

"I have spoken to him and I think it was a bit of a shock to him going over there.

"He told me that he realises what he has in Scotland and what he had in England and so I don't think abroad is for him.

"So it is up to the chairman to sort out the finances but I don't think Kevin is against staying at Kilmarnock, definitely not, especially if we can get players in that we want to get in.

"It is not always about money but it is easy for me to say that.

"He has to look after himself and his family but happiness is a big thing in football and in life."
