Rangers utility man Steven Whittaker insists that scoring goals is his second priority behind keeping clean sheets.

Whittaker netted his 11th goal of the season in Tuesday night's 2-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win at Kilmarnock.

Most of those 11 efforts have come from the full-back position, making the versatile defender's tally even more impressive.

Only Gers strikers Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller have scored more goals than the 25-year-old this campaign but he admits catching up with them is not his main concern.

Target

"As a defender, I don't think getting goals should be the target. Clean sheets should be the target," he said.

"But if I can join in and score a few goals this season, that would be great.

"I'm getting into the positions at the moment and finishing them, so long may that continue.

"It's fantastic to score 11 goals and hopefully I can just keep going until the end of the season. The points and the results are the main thing but it's always nice to play well and to get a goal as well."

Old cliche

The win over Kilmarnock restored the Gers' 13 point lead at the top of the SPL and ensured their impressive record of just one league defeat in the last year remained intact.

Rangers could secure their title as Champions in six-games' time and Whittaker admits keeping the silverware at Ibrox is something the whole team are focused on.

He added: "It's an old cliche but we will just try to win each game that comes along and keep on trying to pick up each three points.

"If we do that, we will get there. We need to respect everyone that we are up against and just go out and do the job."
