Dundee United's on-loan defender Andy Webster insists he wants another crack at becoming a first-team regular at Rangers when he returns in the summer.

The former Hearts centre-half recently made a return to the international stage after a four-year exile as he continues to impress in the Terrors' defence.

Last week, Gers boss Walter Smith expressed his desire to see Webster in a Gers shirt next season and Webster has told skysports.com that he still has unfinished business at Ibrox.

"The deal is still, and always has been, for me to go out on loan for the season and then return to Rangers in the summer," explained Webster.

"As far as I am aware that is still the plan and as much as I've enjoyed my time here I'd like another crack at playing for Rangers.

"I have shown what I can bring to the table while at Dundee United and hopefully I will impress during pre-season back at Rangers and earn a place in the side there for next season."

Scots return

The Dundee-born man earned his 23rd international cap when he played his part in Scotland's 1-0 friendly win over Czech Republic earlier this month, linking up with his former Terrors and Hearts boss Craig Levein once again.

And Webster believes George Burley's replacement is the right man to help turn the nation's fortunes around.

"I think that Craig can be a huge success on the international stage," he continued.

"The Czech Republic result was evidence of that, with it being our first friendly result in something like 14 years.

"Some may say it is only a friendly, but all these things add up in the long run and it is a step in the right direction.

"If you don't perform and get results in the friendlies then you haven't got anything to build on when the games that really count kick in."
