Hearts captain Michael Stewart has revealed he has been in contract talks with the club for the last two months.

The 29-year-old's current deal expires in the summer and manager Jim Jefferies has stated he has yet to decide which players will earn extended contracts.

Stewart is set to miss the Edinburgh derby against Hibernian at the weekend but is hopeful of staying at the club past the summer.

"I started speaking to the club a couple of months ago and we're just in the process of trying to negotiate something," he said.

"That's the situation as it is at the moment; we're in the middle of talking and we'll see how it pans out."

On his calf tear, he added: "It's progressing along quite well.

"The nature of the injury is that I can't really do any more than my body will let me.

"If I do then I'll find myself back at square one, looking at three to four weeks out."
