Hamilton midfielder James McArthur admits he regrets stating he wanted to leave the SPL side for a bigger club over Christmas.

The talented 22-year-old stated over the festive period that he was keen to leave New Douglas Park in order to further his career.

As it transpired the midfielder ended up staying with Hamilton and he now believes he was wrong to speak out over his future.

McArthur insists he is not motivated by the prospect of earning a better contract in England and that helping Hamilton secure their SPL future is his main aim.

Wrong

"When I said last Christmas I wanted to leave Hamilton to further my career I was wrong," explained McArthur. "I love Hamilton and have no burning desire to leave at the first opportunity.

"Anything can happen in the summer to change that and if it does then I've got the support of the manager and the chairman Ronnie MacDonald to do as well as I can.

"A lot of players want to play in England, better themselves and earn some money from what's a very short career. I'm no different. I look at what James McCarthy has done in England and I'm delighted for him. It just shows what is out there if you put the work in.

"But I'm not just in this game for the money and I'd argue the vast majority of players are playing for more than that.

"I don't know any player who doesn't play football firstly for the sheer enjoyment of it and I love playing it at Hamilton.

"Billy Reid has been brilliant for my career and I want to try to repay him by helping Hamilton stay in the league again this year.

"If we stay up then no one can underestimate the achievement. Hamilton are a small club doing exceptionally well in the SPL so we'll deserve credit if we survive again this year."
