Walter Smith has tactfully talked his way around speculation linking Rangers with Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The Gers are reported to have identified the experienced frontman as a possible loan signing.

The former Chelsea and Barcelona forward took in a similar spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season, having struggled to settle at Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

Smith has made no secret of his desire to bolster his ranks during the summer transfer window, with a striker a top priority.

However, he has stopped short of revealing whether Iceland international Gudjohnsen figures on his wish list.

Offered

"We have been offered millions of loan deals," he said.

"Hundreds of players are being offered on loan to clubs, not just us."

Smith was speaking shortly after watching his side secure an impressive 2-1 victory over Premier League new boys Newcastle United in their latest pre-season outing.

On the Ibrox success, he said: "It was a good workout. They made us work extremely hard. Newcastle are a good side, I think they will do well in the Premier League this season.

"The result is never the most important thing at this stage of the season but it was nice to get a win."

Clinical

Magpies boss Chris Hughton was also refusing to read too much into the result afterwards and preferred to focus on the positives his team could take from the game.

"It's never a nice feeling losing football matches, especially this close to the start of the season," he said.

"But there were far more positives from the performance than negatives.

"We have conceded two goals in a game where I thought Rangers' possession at times didn't threaten us as much as we thought they would.

"But in the areas where it matters most, we weren't clinical."
